KONKANI TIATR 'SOGLIM KHUXEAL' IN BAHRAIN
BAHRAIN:The social group Bahrain Goans in association with The Folk Theatre are flying in a group of 11 Konkani stage artistes from Goa. The group will present a Konkani musical drama under the direction of Goa�s trendy Comedian Janet and her husband Filipe Almeida. Former Adviser to Goa government dead

PANAJI: The former Adviser to the Goa government and retired IAS officer, Alban Couto (80), passed away on Saturday following a prolonged illness.Mr. Couto, who served in Goa, Bihar and many other States, was also posted in London in the eighties as director of the Industrial Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat.Besides serving as the first Development Commissioner of Goa in the post-liberation period, Mr. Couto till recently also headed the second Goa State Finance Commission.

Portuguese wonders raise Goa hackles
A row over the inclusion of a 17th-century basilica in Goa and a Diu fortress in a list of seven wonders of Portuguese origin is snowballing into a �cultural controversy�.The Goan Catholic Church and the Goa Freedom Fighters Association, whose members spearheaded the opposition to Portuguese rule, have dubbed the move a �hidden cultural invasion�.Both groups have approached the Centre, urging it to intervene. But officials of the culture ministry refused comment, saying they are �studying the matter�.

'King of Pop' Michael Jackson is dead

Michael Jackson, the show-stopping singer whose best-selling albums -- including "Off the Wall," "Thriller" and "Bad" -- and electrifying stage presence made him one of the most popular artists of all time, died Thursday.He was 50.He collapsed at his residence in the Holmby Hills section of Los Angeles, California, about noon Pacific time, suffering cardiac arrest, according to brother Randy Jackson. He died at UCLA Medical Center.

Goan properties: UK citizens petition Brown
LONDON: Several British citizens who bought property in Goa have petitioned prime minister Gordon Brown to request the Indian government to resolve the impasse in which properties purchased by foreign nationals were not being registered.Over 125 people have signed the petition on the 10, Downing Street website. The petition, led by Andrew F Davies, has been initiated amidst reports of British citizens facing several problems in purchasing and registering properties in Goa.

Three-month-old given Dettol instead of polio drops
A three-month-old child was hospitalised here after the baby was given Dettol instead of polio drops at a health centre in Goa, the state's leader of opposition said. Officials on Saturday confirmed the incident but said the child's father, and not the hospital, had made the mistake.The Bharatiya Janata Party's Manohar Parrikar said the incident occurred in Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane's constituency of Valpoi in north Goa."There has to be a full-scale probe into this incident. This only speaks of the pitiable levels of healthcare in the state," Mr. Parrikar told reporters.

Goa minister claims casino duped him of Rs.1.25 crore winnings
Goa Tourism Minister Francisco alias Mickky Pacheco has accused a casino operator, working out of a popular five-star resort in South Goa, of not paying him Rs.1.25 crore that he had won at the casino last month.In a complaint filed at the Colva police station, the controversial Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator Mickky Pacheco has said that the management of Treasures, a licensed casino operating at the Majorda beach resort, had denied him his winnings in the casino between May 15 to May 22 this year.
